The site of Custer's last stand is an easy day trip from the hotel. If you have read the history of this battle, you cannot help but be affected by the gravestones scattered over the rolling hills. Today, the viewpoints of both the victors and the vanquished are presented by the rangers on duty. The historical interest in the battle is far disproportionate to the number of soldiers (267) killed, because Custer like other westerners became a larger-than-life character in his own day. Each year there is a reenactment of the battle staged by local people who find a fascination in the place. Many of them are well-versed in its history.
